ABC Wednesday - Z.

This is the day we've been waiting for - the end of the alphabet.
Yes, we've reached the letter Z.

Z
is for
ZIRCON

Now, I'm not talking of cubic zirconium, the sparkly synthetic diamond substitute. No, this is the naturally occurring crystal.

My sample is an unworked example, about an inch in diameter. I've tried to show the brown crystals in the stone - they're easier to see if you enlarge the pictures- but it wasn't an easy thing to photograph!

ABC Wednesday was started by Mrs Nesbitt 18 months ago, although I've only participated for the last year. Now I have to decide on a theme for the next round - oh yes, I'll be back next week with letter A again!
For more participants this week, visit the Anthology site or follow the links on the Linky Page. And most of all - have fun!

I love minerals - and I'd never seen zircon, so that was interesting!

Very cool Z! So maybe I'll have to challenge myself to come up with a theme for the next round...hmmm
Thanks for all your help with ABC Wednesday!

Very interesting, I had no idea what they look like in their natural state!

By the way, I have an award for you my friend, will you come and pick it up?

I had no idea there was a natural zircon--very interesting! I've learned a lot about stones and gems through your posts this round, Dragonstar.

Lovely. Very attractive.

My great-aunt gave me a pendant and ring made from the cubic variety for Chrsitmas (I suspect it was originally given to her!) and it was quite fun wearing this big flashy ring on my finger briefly. Made me feel like Posh!

I do like these natural stones - we have a "Rock Shop" fairly near to us where there is a selection of all the semi-precious minerals. I think my favourite is peridot.

Fascinating stuff your gem stones ... I had no idea that is what zircon looks like ... the irredescence (sp?) or mica had to make it a tough rock to shoot and not get glare .. nice work!

Nice to meet another gem-stone-enthusiast! Our house is full, it's sadly time to find new homes for some of them. =o)

I looked at the rocks in Ramsey, I photographed them and then it all goes a little fuzzy. I wouldn't have a clue. I had no idea Zircon looked like this. What will next round be I wonder.
