Jackdaw

Very clever with beak and claws

and likes the fat mix in the coconut shell

(He used his beak to pull the shell upwards, then held it with his claws as he ate)

The Weekend in Black and White.

Last Saturday was Aileni's 80th birthday.
Our children clubbed together to bring the local falconer (Martin Moloney) to Eldest Son's house with two owls, a long-eared owl and Aileni's favourite since a child - a barn owl.

In the first photo the owl moved slightly, but Aileni is clear.

The day was bright, and the windows are large, giving rather too much back light, but the experience was wonderful.  (Yes, I got to hold the owls as well!)

The Weekend in Black and White.

Unexpected Visitor.

This Sparrowhawk  suddenly appeared in our garden, making a meal out of a small bird.
I took the photo through the kitchen window, so the quality isn't as good as it could be, and the hawk kept its eye on me.
It left as soon as it had eaten, flying away between the houses.

Gardens Need Weeds

And this is the reason why.

I saw two young bluetits in the garden, eating seeds from the tall weeds that I meant to clear weeks ago. Now I know why I never got around to it.
The babies moved so quickly that I just couldn't manage to catch them together, but I did get these three photos through the kitchen window. Don't ask me which of the two birds is in each photo! I'm sure they come from the brood hatched in our nest box.

Note to self - get that window cleaned before trying again!

New Babies

At last!
Our Bluetit babies flew the nest before we were up early last Thursday morning.
Today the parents brought them back briefly.

This was the only photo I managed - sorry it's a bit fuzzy, but my window needs cleaning!
I still don't know how many babies there are.

Busy Birds

The Blue Tits are busy!
About a week ago I saw one investigating the nest box that's been on the side of our shed for about a year.
Today, as we were in the kitchen, one of the birds flew inside the box with some grass in its beak.
This happened again and again (interspersed with aggressive behaviour towards a visiting Chaffinch)
I was lucky enough to grab these three shots.

Just look at that beak-full of moss!

And here's some dry grass.

Is anyone out there?

These aren't the best bird photos ever posted on a blog, but I'm so thrilled to have caught them. Believe me, I'll be watching events very carefully!
