ABC Wednesday - N

Here we are at letter N.
I've no gemstones or anything of that sort beginning with N so this week I'm featuring
NACRE

According to my dictionary, nacre is the iridescent internal layer of a mollusc shell. It is also known as 'mother of pearl' since the same substance is used to coat a speck of grit and form a pearl.

Nacre is used for decorative inlays in items as diverse as furniture and musical instruments. It is also cut into various pretty shapes for use in jewellery. More information can be found here.

These are some of the shapes I have. The small ones have been engraved.

Here the small pieces are attached to chains as simple pendants. The larger pieces are fixed to a chain with other items to make a summer necklace.

ABC Wednesday is hosted by Mrs Nesbitt.
More N posts can be found through the Linky site, or on the Anthology page. They are worth a visit.

Nacre might not be a precious stone but it certainly catches the light and has a beautiful soft glow.

Great post today and the photos really enhance the mysterious beauty of nacre. I wonder what ancient artist decided to use a chip of this or that to decorate something. . .?Thanks for sharing!

It's lovely. I've only ever known it as Mother of PEarl though. I always learn stuff when I nip over here!
